Moving Checklist

The earlier you can start planning and preparing for relocation, the less stressful and more organized your move will be. Not all of these helpful tips will apply to you, however we hope they will be a good tool to help you think through the many tasks commonly associated with moves. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call and speak with one of our moving consultants. They would be more than happy to provide additional tips or explanation.

Two Months Before

Sort and Purge. Start thinking about which items you would like to keep and what you can get rid of. Go room by room and try to be as thorough as possible. There are many different options for selling or donating your items, here are a few to get you started:

Salvation Army: www.salarmy.org
Goodwill: www.goodwill.org
Craigslist: www.craigslist.org
EBay: www.ebay.com
Amazon: www.amazon.com

Do Some Reseach. Research different options for moving services. There are a wide range of services available, from full service (where you don't have to lift a finger) to services where you will put a lot of effort in but save yourself some money. Establish what your needs are, and find a mover that best suits you. College Muscle Movers offers a wide range of services, but that does not always mean that we will be the best option.

Organize School Records. Go to your children's school and arrange for their records to be transferred to their new school district.

Time to pack! Get started packing. Start with nonessential or nonseasonal items, or those you don't need to use on a daily basis, and work your way through all of your items. The more you can do early on, the less pressure you'll feel as moving day approaches.

Notify people that you're moving. You should contact the post office, utility companies, and any subscriptions you have to provide them with your new address.

Organize essential documents. The chaos of a move may not seem like it, but it's the perfect time to gather your essential documents to make sure they don't get lost in the shuffle. Medical records, Social Security cards, birth certificates, financial documents, wills, passports, car titles etc should be packed together and set aside. This means that all your important documents will make it safe and sound to your new home.

Make reservations for lodging. Sometimes a few nights in a hotel is necessary before the new home is ready, or if it's a longer distance move. While it's not very common, it's important to make reservations if this applies to you. You don't want to be scrambling to find some place to stay on the day before you actually need it!

One Week Before

Finish packing. It's getting down to crunch time now, so it's important to get all of your nonessential items packed. No matter how much preparation you've done in the preceeding months it's most likely going to be a hectic time, but the finish line is in sight! You'll want to leave the most used items until the last minute, of course, so making a list of the things remaining to pack might be helpful.

Tag furniture for proper placement in your new home. It will save a lot of time and energy on moving day if everything is easily identifiable by location. This will allow the movers to go as quickly and efficiently as possible, often times saving you money! This will also save you some hassle when the movers are gone, with not having to move heavy objects from room to room.
